The WA Education Department has defended its management of a Perth student identified as being at risk of radicalisation before he was shot dead by police after stabbing a man at the weekend.
WA's Education Department has defended the way it handled concerns raised about the radicalisation of a 16-year-old schoolboy who was fatally shot by police after telling a triple-0 operator he was going to commit an act of extreme violence. Parents at the school told the ABC they had contacted police weeks ago after becoming worried their children were being influenced by the teenager, who had been on a Countering Violent Extremist program for two years.Premier Roger Cook on Monday confirmed Education Minister Tony Buti also received a letter from concerned parents, but said police were unable to interfere as the boy had not committed any crimes at that time.
"If you take someone and you force them into it, the person feels like they don't have any choice in that matter. It's going to fail from the outset," he said."The under-resourcing can be quite frustrating in an environment where we do have very, very large defence budgets, where we do have very, very large counterterrorism budgets," he said.
