Man United fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Old Trafford but Erik ten Hag's side were far from their best once again.
Manchester United had barely caught their breath by the time they were 2-0 down, with Taiwo Awoniyi and Willy Boly handing Nottingham Forest a shock lead inside four minutes. Steve Cooper's side had only had two attacks and found the net on both occasions, leaving the Old Trafford crowd silent.
Old Trafford erupted as the ball rippled the net but while several players breathed a sigh of relief, Bruno Fernandes barely broke stride as he raced to get the ball and urged his teammates back for kick-off. The Portugal international's attitude has been called into question in recent weeks, but this was yet another example of his credentials as a captain.
Forest had a great chance to regain their two-goal lead in first-half added-time when Johnson's cut-back found Gibbs-White in the box. His effort looked to be heading in until it cannoned off Awoniyi, with the striker arguably producing United's best defensive moment of the half.United continued to assert themselves after half-time and it only took seven minutes for Casemiro to level the scoreline, fumbling home from close range after a well-worked set-piece.
