But the legendary manager who guided Cleveland teams for the last 11 seasons and became the winningest skipper in franchise history will have to wait a few years before getting the call.
But what needs to happen in order for Francona to take his place among the luminaries of the game in Cooperstown? The answer lies with the Contemporary Baseball Era Non-Players Committee , which is set to convene in December during baseball’s winter meetings in Nashville. “He’ll have to wait until the next cycle simply because even if you have reached that age threshold, you still have to wait six months,” Shestakofsky said.
“We do try to pull from Hall of Famers executives and longtime media members so we get a diversity of opinions,” Shestakofsky said. Once Francona is elected to the Hall, one of the biggest questions he will face is what cap he wears, indicative of the team he is representing on his plaque in the enshrinement gallery. Typically, Shestakofsky says, there is a conversation between Hall officials and the enshrinee.
