Texas Republicans Ted Cruz and John Cornyn were among 37 senators who voted to block the Respect for Marriage Act.WASHINGTON — The Senate on Thursday approved a $1.7 trillion spending package — likely averting a government shutdown at the end of the week — with Texas Republican U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz splitting their votes, part of aRep. Chip Roy slams Sen.

“It is the height of recklessness for Senate Republican leadership to cut a deal with House Democrats who were just voted out of power and give away the leverage that the incoming Republican majority in the House of Representatives could have used to force the Biden administration to change course on policies that are harming America," Cruz said in a statement.

The administration was set to lift Title 42 this week, and return to pre-pandemic asylum laws. But the Supreme Court put a pause on the plan while it weighs arguments by Texas and other GOP states that want it kept in place. Tens of thousands of migrants have gathered along the southern border in anticipation of the order lifting.
