Thailand pays its people to go on holidays to help tourism recover from coronavirus

From relaxing beachside holidays to temple visits in the mountains, Thai people are being encouraged to be tourists in their own country. And best of all, the Government is offering to pick up some of the tab as part of a bid to kickstart the country's tourism industry.

The Thai Government has set aside 10.8 million baht for the scheme, which is run through a bank wallet app on a person's mobile phone.

After checking in to their hotel, a daily spending allowance is added to their wallet app — around $25 on weekends and $38 during the week. "When we reopened in May we didn't have a profit, but we discussed with the staff to reduce their salary.Mr Eupapantawong said his business also suffered because of the lockdown.

Life is getting back to normal, but it will take time for the economy, and particularly the tourism industry, to recover.
