A former senior detective has flatly rejected claims she acted without the approval of her boss Mick Willing and police top brass when she gave a controversial ABC interview alleging political interference in the investigation into the death in Manly of US national Scott Johnson.

Former detective chief inspector Pamela Young outside the LGBTIQ hate crimes inquiry in Sydney on Thursday.host Emma Alberici, Young accused former police minister Mike Gallacher of “kowtowing” to the Johnson family, including Scott’s tech entrepreneur brother Steve, in setting up a reinvestigation in February 2013 into Scott’s death. She said there was “still evidence” Johnson may have died by suicide. Young had supervised the reinvestigation.
