Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth has been grilled over possible changes to negative gearing after reports arose on Wednesday morning that Labor was looking into it.
This claim was confirmed to the publication by a second anonymous Labor official who added the party could still walk away from the changes. After a brief row with her Liberal counterpart over government spending, host Nat Barr switched gears to question the Social Services Minister on the possible changes. After lauding Labor’s various housing initiatives and taking a crack at the former government, Ms Rishworth said it was not in Labor’s “proposal” to tackle negative gearing.
“Well, Treasury does this sort of work - it would have done so under the Coalition, it would have done so,” she said before adding, “Treasury does routine work all the time around different policies, different ideas”. The Liberal Senator said the Coalition looked at possible changes to negative gearing in 2019 when Bill Shorten-led Labor sparked debate over the tax breaks.
