The producers of the James Bond franchise have ruled out casting a female 007, but there was one actor who was briefly considered for the role.

There has yet to be a female James Bond, but the producers actually considered the idea at one point in the franchise. Across the 60-year history of the 007 series, only six actors have played the character. That's a fairly exclusive club, and with Daniel Craig's Bond retirement following No Time To Die, the search is on for the next performer.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One step the James Bond movie franchise has yet to take is casting a female star as 007. Everyone involved in the series from the producers down to Daniel Craig don't think a gender-swapped Bond would be a good idea, with the latter stating to Radio Times that "There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color.

Sharon Stone Was Considered For GoldenEye Due to legal issues, it took six years for Bond to return to screens following 1989's Licence To Kill. While Timothy Dalton considered returning for GoldenEye, he was told he'd need to commit to at least three or four more entries. After he left producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson considered a wide range of names, including Hugh Grant, Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson and even Sharon Stone for GoldenEye's 007.

During this period in the '90s, Stone was one of the biggest stars in the world, thanks to the success of Basic Instinct and Sliver. Stone was no stranger to action roles though, having appeared in Total Recall and fronting Sam Raimi Western The Quick And The Dead. Stone would have been a bold choice for the role, but it appears the actor was never seriously considered for the part.

Why A Female James Bond Is Still Unlikely Outside of this sliding doors moments in the history of the James Bond saga, it appears a female 007 is unlikely to happen in the EON series. Speaking with THR, Broccoli believes the role could be played by a man of color, but doesn't think the role should go to a woman. “I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men’s roles.
