Late on Monday, former special forces soldier Ben Roberts-Smith put out a statement attacking reporting by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. This is our response.
journalists Chris Masters and Nick McKenzie have "falsely asserted that this is a test of press freedom ... We are not asking them to betray their confidential sources.
These witnesses may be voluntary or may attend court in response to a subpoena issued by one of the parties. This is entirely different from revealing confidential sources and the information they provided. During last week’s court hearing, Sandy Dawson SC, the senior barrister forsaid that Roberts-Smith’s argument “conflates the identity of a witness with the identity of the informant”.
