A new international comparison of 1000 cities shows Melbourne ahead of Sydney as the place to be. But one city has a much better quality of life than either.
Melbourne and Sydney have battled for 150 years to claim the mantle as the nation’s best and brightest city.
Canberra, perhaps the most maligned city in Australia, has, according to economic advisory firm Oxford Economics, the second-highest quality of life in the world. Within each of those categories are four to six indicators. For instance, human capital is measured against educational attainment of a city’s population, the number and quality of its universities, population growth, the age profile, proportion of foreign-born residents and corporate headquarters.
Canberra, the bush capital, has the second highest quality of life in the world, according to Oxford Economics.“Because of its many art galleries and the fact that it hosts major sports events, such as the Australian Open and the Australian Grand Prix, Melbourne is widely considered to be the cultural and sporting capital of Australia,” it found.
“Still the foremost city in Australia, Sydney continues to be an attractive place for individuals and companies alike,” it said.
