Marc Newson has created an “honest and trustworthy” public convenience that is the latest in a collection of exceptional loos in Japan’s capital.

In 2020, the non-profit NIPPON foundation began commissioning public toilets in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. The result – known asAt Ebisu station, a glimmering pavilion with a ribbon-like roofline by Pritzker-winning architect Fumihiko Maki marks the start of a trek that winds its way north through the Shibuya ward. It stops byThe Newson-designed toilet is beneath an underpass in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo.

Newson’s design of gently curved concrete corners, an entrance of ceremonial dimensions and copper shingles softly up-lit from concealed eaves. of 1986 remains unchallenged as the world’s most expensive design item since one of the edition of 10 sold at auction in 2015 for £2,434,500. Perched upon a landscaped incline of sculpted rocks, it is a literally elevated sanitary experience. The interior is a seamless pale green-blue featuring three different zones: a men’s, women’s, and a multi-functional space.Compared with the traditional exterior, the luminescent interior appears akin to a spaceship, future-focused., the design-forward public facilities are conceived as an extension of Japan’s renowned omotenashi culture.
