Dana Stephensen thought she’d hung up her pointe shoes for good after having twins last year with Lachy Gillespie, but now she’s back on stage for the Australian Ballet’s Celebration Gala. wiggles ballet sundaylife
Last Christmas, ballet dancer Dana Stephensen spent the day trying to escape the stifling heat in a darkened room, settling the newborn twin daughters, Lulu and Lottie, she shares with Lachlan “Lachy” Gillespie, aka the Purple Wiggle.
Dana wears Nevenka “A symbol of Transformation” dress. Lachy wears Dom Bagnato three-piece suits and shirt, R.M. Williams boots. Lulu wears Fox & Finch dress from David Jones, Seed Kids hair bow and tights. Lottie wears Fox & Finch dress from David Jones, Seed Kids hair bow. Jasper wears Country Road shirt and shorts.Pregnancy is such a transformative time, especially for a ballet dancer.
I was really struggling a lot of the time – it wasn’t like I was pushing the pram and chatting with everyone. I was very removed. I was like, “I know what this job is. It’s full-on. It’s days, it’s nights, it’s training, it’s touring.” Everyone said, “Don’t start there. Why not just go and talk about dancing again?”As someone who trained my whole life and had goals, it was a very different thought process. I wasn’t thinking about a particular season to come back to or a role.It was very simple.
Ballet is grace and elegance, but everyone knows we’re working really hard underneath. That’s the greatest metaphor for the reality of being a ballet dancer, especially with children. You are kicking like mad underneath to try to stay afloat. But Lachy and I both feel incredibly lucky to do what we do, that we found our passion so early on and we get to live that out. We are very supportive of each other in that way.
