It's set to be spectacular
It will be the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year according to experts. And it will be evident this week.
But exactly what is a supermoon and when is the best time to see it? According to space.com, "it is when the moon will arrive at its closest point to the Earth for 2022" and you'll be able to witness this event on Wednesday, July 13. That same website explained that we can thank an astrologer writing in a magazine back in 1979 for the term 'supermoon'. Richard Nolle wrote that "a full moon which occurs with the moon at or near its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit would get the 'super' branding". Wednesday's full moon qualifies under this description.You won't need any special equipment or even have to stay up late to enjoy this natural spectacle.
This month's full moon is known as the Buck Moon. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, the Buck Moon in July will orbit closer to Earth than any other this year, meaning it will be the biggest and brightest we will see in 2022. It will be just 200km closer to our home planet than June's Strawberry Moon, at 222,089 miles away.
The Old Farmer's Almanac said its names for full moons came from a variety of places and July's is called the Buck Moon because that's when the antlers of male deer - bucks - are in full growth. Bucks shed and regrow their antlers every year and they get bigger as they go. There are some alternative names for July's moon, including Feather Mounting Moon and Salmon Moon.
