With the mercury nudging 40 degrees for long stretches, residents just have to look at the skies for the reason why.

The Top End is no stranger to heat, especially in the pre-monsoonal season, but it's been hotter than usual, reports Weatherzone.

The town of Tindal, near Katherine, has also had a high number of near 40 degrees days this season, sitting on 23 since October 1, more than the number of such days for all of October and November in 2022. Every day except two have had a maximum temperature of 37 degrees since the beginning of October.

The culprit is not warm sea surface temperatures associated with extreme land conditions, but the cloudless skies over the Top End.
