Crank Caverns have been the subject of dark folktales for centuries, with stories of people going missing, never to be seen again
A labyrinth of caves and tunnels on the edge of Greater Manchester has been the subject of dark folktales for centuries. Just a few miles beyond Ashton-in-Makerfield lie Crank Caverns, an abandoned subterranean world near Rainford in St Helens.
Over the years the caves have suffered neglect, mainly due to fly-tipping and graffiti, but the mythology and stories that surround them still attract people to the site. The entrances and tunnels are man-made due to the quarrying that took place there, but they are rumoured to be connected to older, deeper, natural labyrinths.
Soldiers were reportedly sent into the caves and claimed they found a heap of bones and the ruins of an ancient church while feeling that they were being watched and hearing voices. It was also claimed in the 18th century that a child's head was discovered in the cave, suggesting evidence of cannibalism.
