'It’s this thing called the ‘paradox of choices’. If you have too many, you actually get quite restless. So when you make a choice, you will not be happy because you know that you can change it” acting RenateReinsve

Renate Reinsve had quit acting. She’d been performing in theatre since she was nine, and more than 20 years on, she’d had enough. “I told my boyfriend and some of my closest friends I was going to do something else,” she says. Her new vocation? Carpentry. “I had renovated a house and I felt so empowered. There’s not many women who do carpentry and I wanted to learn it, and make a community where people could learn.

“Then he wrote the script, and when I read it, I felt it was a very multi-dimensional and good portrait of a woman, and all the scenes were so rich.” So Renate put her woodwork ambitions aside and began filming her lead role inThe romantic dramedy follows Julie , who struggles to navigate both her love life and her career path. It’s a smart, sexy and offbeat film that perfectly captures that niggling feeling of never quite feeling like a “grown-up”.

There is one particular aspect of Julie’s personality which makes her most relatable: her struggle to make decisions. “Most people have so many choices these days,” Renate says. “Even going to the grocery store … It’s this thing called the ‘paradox of choices’. If you have too many, you actually get quite restless. So when you make a choice, you will not be happy because you know that you can change it.

Renate, who bears a striking resemblance to American actor Dakota Johnson, is indeed speaking via Zoom from the shed in the back garden of her home in Norway. It is a peaceful space away from the main house and allows her to escape to do media interviews. But her two-year-old son has found her out here and begins to call from outside the door.

This familiar expression sounds as though it has a friendlier connotation in Norway than it does here, where there’s a tendency to cut people down for their success. “Everyone leaves everyone alone,” Renate explains. “If I walk now, people look but they leave me alone.“But if I’m in France or Italy and people want autographs and pictures, that’s very new to me. But I enjoy it. Luckily, I like people and I love this project, so that makes it easy.
