Older Australians are being urged to book health checks after new research revealed a “silent killer” is deadlier than previously thought.The condition involves a narrowing and calcification of the aortic valve, making it difficult to pump blood around the body.A study by the University of Notre Dame Australia and National Echo Database Australia found those with even a mild case of aortic stenosis were at a far greater risk of death than previously thought.
About two-thirds of people with a mild case were likely to die within five years if the condition was left untreated, a death rate only marginally lower than those with a severe case.
