For the past few years, the Forrests have turned their considerable influence and wealth towards the fight to save the globe’s dying oceans.
Despite making his billions on land, Andrew Forrest’s true passion lies in ocean conservation – and by next Tuesday he will have a special bit of paper to prove it.
However, the centrepiece of their fight and the announcement that has turned the most heads is a $440 million plan to make recycled plastics cheaper than creating the material from scratch. “You simply drive the world to the great rubbish dumps and coagulated rivers and landfills across Australia, North America and Europe; they automatically become the ore bodies.”
Minderoo will present the plan to the world oceans conference in Japan in March and the UN oceans conference in Lisbon in June.“You may be assured that those people who are in want plastic to be environmentally neutral and cause no harm and are prepared to take the steps to ensure that plastic causes no harm. Those who are out will be those companies who blatantly don’t give a damn,” he said.
“I’m really proud of FMG's track record ... of course we are investing everywhere across the energy supply chain,” he said.
