Drive or stroll into the beautiful village of Downham in Lancashire and the first thing that hits you is the unspoilt views of rolling countryside. The next thing you might notice is that the pretty stone cottages along the winding lane fail to feature modern details like TV aerials, power lines or satellite dishes.

Today the ancestral Downham Estate is managed by the Hon Ralph Assheton, with the family residence Downham Hall one of the beautiful properties in the village. In the Downham ice cream shop, next to the village green, you can find plenty of Whistle Down the Wind memorabilia including chocolate bars wrapped in famous scenes from the film starring Hayley Mills.

The pub holds a majestic position at the top end of Downham, with an outdoor seating terrace boasting spectacular views across the rolling hills. The 18th century gastropub boasts six bedrooms and is a popular stop off for walkers and tourists in this area, while weddings and parties are also booked here.

"One example is the transformation of Brookside Barn in the village into office accommodation and, nearby, the eco-friendly Bowland Bioenergy, which supplies sustainable wood fuel products for biomass heating.
