A damning report released by the ACT government paints a grim picture of the current systems in place to help survivors of sexual assault.
"In 2020, the ACT also had one of the lowest proportions of investigations finalised and the lowest proportion finalised with proceedings against the offender," the report said.
The report also painted a stark image of the ACT's penalties against those who perpetrated sexual violence. In response to the report, ACT Chief Police Officer Neil Gaughan said he had listened to the victim survivors and called for additional funding from the ACT government to improve the police's capacity to respond to sexual crimes.
When asked about the individual experiences of some of the victims highlighted in the report, Commissioner Gaughan said he accepted that changes needed to be made. One of the report's 24 recommendations included amending current laws across the territory to establish an affirmative communicative model of consent.draft bill before the Assembly regarding changing consent lawsACT Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury said the government would listen to the findings of the report, and start to make changes accordingly.
