A new report from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's landmark took in the costs of health services used by people in the last 12 months of their life, including hospital admissions, emergency presentations, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme prescriptions, and Medicare Benefits Schedule services.
A total estimated cost of $296.1 billion was spent on these services during this time with eight per cent of the total cost being for people in their last year of life, AIHW spokesperson Richard Juckes said.
