In real estate, like fashion, taste is everything. And that’s why cream-brick houses are making a comeback - but for some people only.

A five-bedroom, 10-month-old house at 38 Erlandsen Avenue, Sorrento, Victoria. Sold by private treaty for $4.5 million.

Home to go: The owner, a builder, built the house for himself, but sold it only 10 months after completion because he had decided to move to Queensland. It was a very modern home that looked a lot older than it was. It’s not your classic beach house. If it was a classic beach house it would have been painted white.

The choice of bricks made it look very ’80s. Eight in 10 enquiries were asking us whether it was a renovation rather than a new house.I don’t think it affected the price but it certainly was confusing to a lot of buyers that looked at it. The guy built it for himself. He liked the look. If we were doing it as a development, you would choose something more conducive to what the market wants.

One of the other reasons it didn’t sell was the vendor was looking for a bit more. He was originally asking $5 million for the house. That’s always the main reason houses are slow to sell.A week before it was sold. Hence, once the price came down, we had some competitive and spirited interest in the house and then that’s what caused the final price. We had three buyers in the end.
