Residents and owners with Land and Environment Court Commissioner Peter Walsh outside the apartments in Elizabeth Bay on Wednesday.The extraordinary hearing was also attended by representatives of developer Fortis, which has applied to demolish the 28-unit block running from the historic Onslow Avenue to Billyard Avenue, and replace it with a $230 million complex of 22 large luxury units.
“In the midst of both a housing crisis and a cost-of-living crisis, we have a responsibility as a society to ensure we create more, not fewer, housing options, and that we not drive out members of our community who have lived in this area for decades ... The less well-off will effectively be displaced from the existing building and replaced by those who can afford multi-milliondollar apartments.”
There are five other buildings of studios and one-bedrooms in the area which are also proposed to be knocked down and replaced by luxury apartments for cashed-up downsizers, potentially reducing the number of homes on those six sites from a total of 209 to 85, a net loss of 124.Ninejumped from the top floor of his building after hearing his rental home of the past 23 years was to be redeveloped.
“This area has always been a mixed, diverse neighbourhood for everyone, from the rich to the workers to artists and all sorts of people from every level. These people and their homes are the soul of the community and if they are turfed out of their homes, we will all be the poorer for it.
