Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has nominated Stones Corner as Brisbane’s next urban renewal zone. With almost 400 units under construction, local traders are cautiously optimistic.
Stones Corner, the working-class suburb once known as Brisbane’s “clothing outlet capital”, is staring urban renewal squarely in the face.
“We are on the main rail Cleveland line, we have the Eastern Busway just here and we’re on Old Cleveland Road and Logan Road, so we are at the confluence of other regular bus routes as well,” Weibler said.to allow increased density supported by public transport and local planning.“One that we are looking at now is Stones Corner,” Schrinner said.
Stones Corner book owner Michael Weibler chairs the local traders association and says big changes should not be forced on the Logan Road streetscape and businesses.In Logan Road, opposite the Stones Corner Hotel, the Huon Property Group this month received Brisbane City Council approval for 114 apartments over 16 storeys.“That’s good. The street needs to have ongoing shop frontages.”
