Around 350 blocks sell on Russell Island every year, but sales are nearly three times higher in 2020, according to a local real estate agent.
It has long been known as a haven for retirees and those seeking the cheapest land in South East Queensland, but the Southern Moreton Bay Islands have seen a renewed interest in a COVID-19 property market.Real estate agents say up to 60 blocks are being sold every weekProperty sales on Russell Island have effectively tripled in the last three months, while it is estimated that building activity has doubled.
John Bonett runs an earthmoving and tree-clearing business based on Macleay Island, while servicing all of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands. "But it is getting harder and harder when I am not only battling the everyday costing of quoting and controlling the crew, but battling neighbours and council. Many of the roads on the islands remain unsealed, while there is no kerb and channel drainage and no access to sewage, with every new house built having to put in a septic tank."If people find it too hard to build here and too complicated and expensive, they will stop building and put properties back on the market.
