The hunt for a cure for long COVID is obstructed by the fact scientists still don’t fully understand its causes; there are likely to be multiple mechanisms, possibly overlapping.

Madeline Cooper loved her job, running mental health and wellbeing programs for children and young people at a non-profit.

Cooper cut her hours back, gradually and then more and more, until she was working just two half-days a week. In mid-December, her company told her that they’d have to let her go because she couldn’t work enough. That’s no reason not to search, says Dr Pippa Yeoman, a University of Sydney researcher who has long COVID. “Just because its complicated it doesn’t mean that [going] slow is OK. There is not nearly enough urgency in setting up and running clinical trials.”If the problem is inflammation, says Professor Craig Anderson, the director of brain health at the George Institute, perhaps the treatment needs to focus on dampening down the immune system.

At a clinic in Adelaide, Clinical Nurse consultant Marie-Claire Seeley is treating long COVID patients with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome , a disorder characterised by a fast heartbeat and difficulty standing.
