The owners have applied to resume trading after two decades, but some locals are voicing their opposition – citing the pub’s chequered history.
Grace Bayliss-McCulloch has only lived in St Kilda West for a few years, but she knows what happened down the street from her house 20 years ago.
Port Phillip Council has received 182 objections to an application for a bar at the 143-year-old building on Beaconsfield Parade, after initial plans to operate seven days a week until 1am with a maximum of 590 patrons caused alarm among locals. In the face of community opposition, the application has already been changed to reduce trading hours and cut the maximum number of patrons.Under the latest plans, the pub would be allowed to open until 11.30pm on Friday and Saturdays, with a customer limit of 400 people. The courtyard would have to close at 10pm during the warmer months.
“The area has changed,” Grace said. “One of the big reasons why we and other families have moved to St Kilda West is because it’s not St Kilda. It’s quite a small suburb of residential streets.”Among her family’s concerns were the noise and anti-social behaviour created by drinkers when trying to find a way home. Their house sits directly between the pub and the two closest tram routes.
Another objector, Kathy Hutchens, said she was worried about the impact from noise on the tenants of the building she owns, which sits next door to the pub.“I don’t think that they view people’s people’s sleepless nights as a consideration.”
