Price rises and tough competition from American operators have hit crowds at NSW’s Thredbo ski resort.
A couple of weeks ago there was a minor traffic jam near the top of the Thredbo snow resort in NSW. Skiers and snowboarders waited 10 minutes or so, atop plentiful snow and under clear skies, to ride the Basin T-bar.
Jindabyne is the last town from Sydney before the two resorts. Some skiers credit Perisher with a big advantage: “Epic” passes to some 40 resorts in five countries, including Whistler Blackcomb in British Columbia, and Vail and Beaver Creek in Colorado. “The idea behind these urban ski areas was that locals would buy Epic passes and then spend their ski holidays at another Vail Resorts property,” Snow says. “I believe a similar goal was likely behind their purchase of Perisher, Hotham and Falls Creek in Australia.”
