Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has applauded US President Donald Trump’s plan to take ownership of and rebuild Gaza, despite “real difficulties” expected to be encountered.

A former Australian foreign minister has commended President Donald Trump on his plan for a US takeover of Gaza , despite doubt over whether it would work, declaring “the status quo is finished”.

Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has applauded US President Donald Trump’s plan to take ownership of and rebuild Gaza, despite “real difficulties” expected to be met. While Mr Downer admitted he did not think President Trump’s plan would be comprehensively carried out, it was a “wonderful case of a leader disrupting the status quo”.

“Palestinians are so radicalised, I mean, these are Islamists. They don't want hardcore Islamists moving into their territory and having to deal with that problem so that there are some real political difficulties for them there," he said.
