CEOs are still being handsomely rewarded, but growth in their pay has stalled in the past decade thanks to a combination of several factors.

is so eye-watering that it would spark outrage in any given year.

Look beyond the Afterpay pair’s massive windfall – and even ACSI’s attempts to spruik a record in bonus payments to CEOs of ASX 100 companies – and a different picture emerges. It can be summed up in one word: restraint. Over the period from the 2014 financial year to the 2021 financial year, average adult earnings increased by 2.4 per cent per annum, compared with a rise of just 0.6 per cent for ASX 100 CEOs. Consider inflation over that period and both groups have gone backwards.

The long-term trends in the ASCI pay survey suggest boards have heard investor and community concerns about surging executive pay, and acted. Not only have pay growth rates stayed low over the past 10 years, but there has been a clear tilt towards more being paid in the form of equity, which better aligns the interests of executives with those of shareholders.
