The tennis ace who put Barty through her paces: World No.1 prepares for Anisimova | walshcee
The transformational moment in Ashleigh Barty’s career stemmed from a crisis on court against Amanda Anisimova on a bitter and blustery day in Paris in 2019.
The Brisbane resident somehow dropped the first set in a tie-breaker and found herself trailing 3-0 in what seemed the snap of a serve in the second. Her game was bereft in the breeze and her hopes looked forlorn. “It hasn’t worked every time, but it’s made me really comfortable and made me feel like I belong on the court. I get to do it my way. I get to be unique. I get to experiment and I get to have fun with it.”
Osaka has been a supreme player on hard courts in recent years, as evidenced by the two grand slam titles she has won in Melbourne and New York since 2018. But as the Japanese champion’s coach Wim Fissette said in an interview before the Australian Open, Barty has proven herself a more than worthy No.1.The Belgian, who has coached several grand slam champions, can remember thinking Barty was a special talent after she won the 2011 Wimbledon girls title.
Tauson, who Barty defeated at the US Open last year, has no doubt that whenever the Australian is at the peak of her powers, she is especially hard to beat.
