Sydney residents will go to the polls on Saturday to vote for the city's lord mayor – a title that echoes the country's ties to the British monarchy.
"As Great Britain took possession through conquest of its continents, it naturally meant that it introduced the system of governments, public life and civic rules that were based on their own practice," he said. Adjunct professor at the Australian Centre for Public History at the University of Technology Sydney, Paul Ashton, said Sydney's first lord mayor had campaigned for the title.
For non-capital cities, the title is granted as a result of a significant event in the history or geography of the state.Newcastle became the first non-capital city to be granted with the title by King George VI in 1948. "As a historian, I think that calls to remove lord from the title of lord mayor in given towns in Sydney, or Melbourne, or Adelaide, they are missing something very significant," he said.
"Tradition is not something that should be whitewashed or swept away just because we think that is no longer relevant. I think traditions should be cherished and traditions should be explained.""I do think it's outdated," he said.
