The Man United icon often got his man in 27 years at Old Trafford but despite multiple attempts, failed to prize Alessandro Del Piero away from Juventus.
Sir Alex Ferguson so often got his man at Manchester United and in 27 years, few were able to say no to the persistent Scot.
Having broken into senior football as a 17-year-old at Padova in 1992, Del Piero made an impression on Juventus chiefs and joined the Italian giants the following year. He initially played with the reserves but didn't take long to earn his promotion into Giovanni Trapattoni's first-team. "Del Piero is the only one who I would've gone mad for," Ferguson said via Inside Sport. "After a Champions League match between United and Juventus, in which he destroyed half of our defence, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville came to me and asked me to buy him at all costs, because someone like him would have made us win everything for decades.
"And so I called him directly, avoiding talking to Juventus," Ferguson recalled "'Alex, I'd like you at United', I said. 'You'll be the star of the squad, and together we'll win everything. Don't listen to Real Madrid, and come here'. "Yeah," Del Piero told MUTV when asked if there was ever a chance of him joining United. " say yes, I say yes regarding the possibility that we work together. But it didn't happen at the end of the day.
