Russia-Ukraine war: Will the West help Ukraine win?

Kaboom! – that was the reaction of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, to news that the Ukrainian military had driven Russian forces from Snake Island.

The Ukrainians’ recapture of Snake Island – or, as Moscow says, Russia’s “goodwill gesture” of voluntary withdrawing – was Ukraine’s only good news from the battlefront this week. “At the rate our soldiers are going, very soon the whole territory of the [self-declared] Luhansk People’s Republic will be liberated,” Luhansk separatist militia leader Andrei Marochko said this week.

Putin will have taken over much of the Donbas and gained a land bridge to Crimea, the peninsula Russia annexed in 2014. That may be enough to declare “mission accomplished” for what he has always called a “special military operation”. The war for hearts and minds in the West looked a little brighter this week for Zelensky and his countrymen. The Kremenchuk attack helped galvanise Europe’s increasingly divided leaders, who united in unconditional condemnation of the missile strike.

Germany, meanwhile, still pays Moscow more than $US220 million a day for oil and gas. Although Russia threatens to cripple the industrial base of Europe’s No. 1 economy by turning off the taps, Berlin has nowhere else to turn.
