Former treasurer Michael Ferguson was one of the cashless card's biggest advocates within the government. Now that he's resigned from cabinet, there are fears the government won't stick to its policy announced two years ago.

When the Tasmanian government unveiled its plans to introduce a mandatory cashless gaming card two years ago, it was heralded as nation-leading.

"Every single person in this room you've got your own story and I've got mine," he told the press pack in September 2022.Since then, the implementation has been delayed and is now due at the end of 2025.And yet, some are worried that the government's commitment to the card is wavering. "With his absence from the cabinet, the premier has clearly got the go ahead to listen to what the THA want," independent MP Kristie Johnston said.

Mr Rockliff: I'm well aware of the impacts of gaming on individuals and vulnerable members of our community that's why we remain committed to the pre commitment card.It was also revealed in parliament that the government has sought advice from the State Growth Department on how the cards would affect the tourism and hospitality sector.

The questions included whether the card would be mandatory, if the government was still committed to the default loss limits, and if it was considering changes to the card's features.
