Often you walk into a lobby and know immediately that the hotel is exactly what you want – or not.

In a very clever recent brand campaign, Small Luxury Hotels identified six types of travellers and teamed them with hotel experts to find the hotels that best suited their personalities.

To find out, SLH invited their UK guests to a casting call, where they were auditioned and asked a series of questions about their ideal hotel. Then the group of 400 volunteers was narrowed down to 40 diverse finalists, who were interviewed by a panel of four hotel experts. From this, six faces were chosen to represent the brand.

It’s very predictable, which is why I found this campaign refreshing and entertaining – and it cleverly harnessed the charm of real travellers.Shivam from Manchester, who liked trying new things like surfing, diving and photography, exemplified the “curious wanderer”.Kerry, from Northumberland, who preferred rustic hotels in natural settings was the “nature-loving nomad”.

I don’t think any type of hotel is going to please the habitual complainer but even the easiest-going of us have opinions about what we like or dislike in a hotel, even if we’ve chosen our accommodation according to budget.
