She felt burdened by shame and anxiety as she tried to hide what she was going through. Then she began to work at the college’s food pantry, which Armstead said ignited her “healing process” as she met other students with similar struggles. Witnessing her family’s sacrifices throughout the years has fueled Tigabu through the obstacles that came with being a first-generation student at the University of Texas at Arlington.

“My diploma isn’t just for me, it’s a representation of all the work that my family put into it,” she said. “We all did this together.”Leaning on family
