NSW faces a crisis that could see more recycling going into landfill after China's decision to stop accepting Australian waste, councils have warned | juliepower
Ask nine-year-old Tom O'Brien from Freshwater about recycling and rubbish, and he will tell you how turtles die after they mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. "They go to eat a jellyfish, and it turns out to be a plastic bag, and they can't eat and they starve," he said on Sunday.
On Wednesday, the LGNSW will be holding an election summit on the "recycling crisis" to discuss potential solutions including changes to the waste levy. NSW Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton, the Opposition's environment spokesperson Penny Sharpe, Green's MP Cate Faehrmann and environmental scientists and others are expected to face public questioning.
The return and earn container scheme had also resulted in the recycling of 1.4 billion eligible drink containers. Very few people understood the challenges facing NSW's ability to reprocess paper and bottles since the Chinese government decided early last year to reduce its intake of Australian waste.
