Opposition parties say with construction costs soaring, the council should have framed its July budget better to preclude the need for spending cuts.

The reaction by Labor and the Greens to Brisbane council’s 10 per cent spending cuts shows how both parties will tackle the March 2024 election to win City Hall.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner on Tuesday announced a 10 per cent cut to all spending across council’s $4.3 billion June 2023 budget until July 2024, to prevent the need for further increases in household rates. Spending on parks, road resurfacing, roadworks, footpaths, ward offices, advertising and consultants have also been cut by 10 per cent. A report will be finalised by late November to save $430 million.
