One-quarter of Australian homes will be empty at some time over Christmas, leaving residents vulnerable to robberies.

Allianz market manager Nick Adams said that, in general, Australian attitudes towards home security were quite relaxed, especially recently. A recent survey from research company Finder said that home security system sales had been in decline, with just over 20 per cent of the country using an alarm system in their house.Despite being much more likely to go away for the Christmas break, younger Australians are still not taking proper security precautions, with nearly 40 per cent of those surveyed in the 18-24 age bracket saying they may forget to lock doors or windows before heading off.

NSW Police assistant commissioner Max Mitchell said: ''Thieves don’t take a holiday – they often use this opportunistic time to break into homes while families are out of town.
