Think the pandemic was done ruining Australian sport? Think again | VinceRugari

Australian sport is back on tenterhooks. Just when it seemed the worst of the pandemic was behind us and the country was double-jabbed and ready to roll with the punches, the Omicron variant of COVID-19 is threatening to bring everything to a halt again.

While the resolve of state governments is to be sternly tested in the coming weeks, it appears there is no immediate prospect of returning to lockdowns, and no changes to border policies as they stand – which means no major interruptions on the horizon for the summer sports and probably not even any new restrictions around how many people can attend matches or events. Not yet, anyway.

No sport wants to shell out for a third season in a bubble, and no player wants to spend any more time in one. The trade-off is having to live with this sort of disruption, and accepting the prospect that anybody could be sidelined at any time. That is what is happening overseas. In England, where Omicron is taking hold, the Premier League reported a record 42 cases of COVID-19 last week.
