We Are Unity boss Ben Bars is looking forward to cruising on some of the highest roads in the world.

en Bars is chief executive at We Are Unity, a consultancy helping companies to unite culture, brand and strategy. He lives in Sydney. My last adventure on the bike was from Sydney to the Byron Bay hinterland, riding through the mountains on Thunderbolts Way with a swag on the back and no particular agenda other than to enjoy the scenery. Typically, I ride up to Palm Beach for a bucket of prawns or down to the Southern Highlands for a Sunday lunch.

Ben Bars and his Harley-Davidson Fat Bob: “It’s a riding style that allows you to sit up and appreciate the world around you.”When I was about six years old, we had a miniature off-road bike and I remember my grandfather putting me on it for the first time to ride around a field. It’s funny how these specific moments create an experience that stays with you forever. When you’re exposed to controlled risk as a child, it can certainly shape who you become as an adult.

Bars says “riding is a form of meditation for me” because nothing else comes up when he’s watching the road. All of the above. In summer, I ride to work across the Sydney Harbour Bridge every day, which is a magical way to start the day. Every Sunday, I try to get a couple of hours on the bike to just cruise around the national park. Riding is a form of meditation for me, because when I’m laser-focused on the road, nothing else gets into my mind.

The other ride on my wish list would be through North India across the beautiful Himalayas and into Nepal, cruising on some of the highest roads in the world. That would require a pit crew to follow us, given how unpredictable the conditions are, let alone the reduced oxygen at 16,000 feet above sea level.

A dream biking holiday would be in South America, such as this motorcyclist on Ruta 23 in Patagonia, Argentina. If there were something to dislike, it would be that not enough of my mates ride. It’s not for everyone, and with so many having young families, the risk factor is a barrier to entry. I hear a lot of partners saying, “It’s not that I don’t trust your road safety. I’m more concerned about everyone else on the road,” which is a fair comment.
