This front page from 100 years ago brings us a sad story about a newborn who was found in a trash heap in the 2900 block of Leeland. On the afternoon of Dec.
8, residents heard the wails of a baby coming from the area and went out to investigate. They found the baby, wrapped in an old newspaper, amid the trash on that lot. The Chronicle reported that the child's lips were badly lacerated and he had a bruise on the back of his head. The baby was taken to Baptist Hospital where nurses named him Joseph Fern. A Chronicle article a few days later said the baby was probably not more than an hour load when he was abandoned, according to doctors.
Less than a week later, another abandoned baby would turn up on Houston's streets, this time on Velasco. Like Joseph, he was also taken to Baptist Hospital.
