Athabascan was scratched on the eve of the Melbourne Cup after it was found to have a cardiac arrhythmia during a compulsory pre-race vet check.The French import is trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton and was an outsider to win the Cup.On Monday, punters came hard for two Chris Waller runners at the Cup call of the card, backing Buckaroo and Land Legend to win more than $1 million each.
Land Legend will again be ridden by Hong Kong-based hoop Zac Purton after the pair finished third in the Caulfield Cup, despite the UK import pulling badly and failing to settle during the race.Another heavily backed horse at the call of the card on Monday was the Ciaron Maher-trained Interpretation, with one punter standing to collect $500,000 at $21 and another looking to win $400,000 at $21.
