All too often, at election time, the major parties descend into a bidding war to determine who can be “toughest” on crime rather than considering whether “tough” sentencing laws actually work.
However, it is a great pity he so readily dismisses the misgivings of two Court of Appeal judges about the dangerous consequences of mandatory sentencing, which effectively destroys the judiciary’s ability to impose an appropriate sentence in many cases.
As their honours correctly observed, “sending young people to adult jail is almost inevitably counterproductive”.Kristine Ziwica comments on the findings that women are grumpy because more than their fair share of housework and unpaid care falls on them. They are five times more grumpy about the chore wars than they were before the pandemic.
