A massive clean-up effort is underway at a popular Sydney beach after up to 10,000 partygoers attended an annual Christmas Day event and left a huge mess for council to deal with the next day. Residents in Sydney's east have been left fuming after mounds of rubbish were left behind again by thousands of revellers at an annual Christmas Day beach party.

Up to 10,000 people, including locals and backpackers, gathered at Bronte Beach on Wednesday to drink, dance and mingle with friends to celebrate December 25. Photos and videos shared online showed the large crowd of partygoers enjoying the sunshine and warm weather on one of the smaller beaches in the Harbour City. However at the end of the festivities, rubbish such as beer bottles, food, packaging and boxes, reusable shopping bags and even tents were left behind at the adjoining park. Waverley Council had anticipated a messy end to the event and had placed an additional 250 garbage bins around the beach, after similar scenes in previous years. Council workers were dispatched about 8pm on Christmas Day to begin clearing the mess to ensure it was cleaned as fast as possible', Mayor Will Nemesh said online. 'Overall the reports from Police, our rangers, additional security and our lifeguards has been positive - there was very minimal antisocial behaviour and the extra measures introduced this year have had a positive result compared to previous years,' he wrote.
