In Victoria, the crime reporting line for non-urgent police matters has been flooded in recent days receiving more than 2,600 yesterday alone. 9News
Police say they won't hesitate to issue hefty fines if they pull drivers over this long weekend and issue tickets for any non-essential travel.
In addition to roadside checks, officers will be using CCTV and number plate recognition to check on cars, along busy roads and motorways, including in South East Queensland where they will monitor cars driving southbound on the M1 between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Queensland Police stop vehicles at a Police checkpoint set up at the Queensland and New South Wales border.
The on-the-spot fines differ in each state. In Queensland, drivers risk paying $1,300, in NSW, $1,000 and in Victoria about $1600.NSW, ACT and WA drivers will also be facing double demerits over the long weekend for ay traffic offences.
