LATEST: There are EIGHT fires burning at Watch and Act level across NSW. 9News Stay up to date:

Unions NSW has called on all employers to give non-essential workers the option of staying indoors or taking the day off with smoke over the state today.

"Over the past fortnight, NSW has had the world's worst air quality, with pollution readings off the charts," Unions NSW secretary Mark Morey said."Those with existing conditions such as asthma, emphysema and heart problems are particularly vulnerable. "Face masks offer little protection against intense pollution of the type NSW is experiencing. The best way to avoid exposure is to stay indoors.

"As the smog persists in coming weeks, no one should feel compelled to work outdoors if their health is likely to be affected. Employers have an obligation to provide a safe workplace. "The NSW Government should lead the way by making clear to its 400,000 strong workforce that unless they are engaged in essential services or emergency work, they should not work outdoors if their health is affected."
