Thousands of homes have lost power and trees have been brought down in Sydney by strong winds that buffeted the city overnight.Wind brought down powerlines across Sydney's west and south-westBureau of Meteorology forecaster Rowan Smith said the gusts, which eased after sunrise, were due to a focused westerly wind.

Endeavour Energy spokesman Peter Payne said 19,000 homes and businesses were without power shortly before 7am. The NSW Rural Fire Service said a grassfire at Wallacia, south of Penrith, burned near homes overnight, but there was no structural damage.
