Endeavour Energy has launched legal action to stop six months of industrial action, as other power workers join to form a triple threat to major projects in NSW.

Already a subscriber?Electricity distribution company Endeavour Energy has launched a bid to end six months of industrial action that has caused huge delays to major projects in NSW, including the state government’s Aerotropolis city centre and a major feeder road to the upcoming Western Sydney Airport.

Industry sources said the ETU’s industrial action – in support of a 24 per cent pay rise over three years – was the most damaging in the country and sending some construction contractors to the wall. Construction projects affected include at least 3000 homes, the $1.7 billion project to link the M7 with the new toll-free M12 motorway, which will feed into the Western Sydney Airport, and a slew of warehouses.

However, Endeavour Energy said even if the action ended next week, it would take at least 12 months to clear the backlog of work.ETU NSW secretary Allen Hicks said the union would oppose the application and strongly rejected Endeavour Energy’s claims, describing them as an “abhorrent misrepresentation of the truth”.

Endeavour Energy, Ausgrid and Essential Energy provide electrical distribution networks for most of the state. Their combined networks span from outer western Sydney to Broken Hill near the NSW-Victorian border, to the Central Coast and far-north areas of the Hunter region.

An Essential Energy spokeswoman said the ETU’s pay claim of a 24 per cent increase over three years was not sustainable and would result in “significant upward pressure on power bills”.
